Dr Igneous Kathexy, Col. Steve Austin, Napoleon Solo, and even Alexander Waverley in attendance.
Arrived toward the end of the Groan Ups, featuring Richard and the drummer from the Interstellar Villains. Standing room only in the cosy modern back bar of the Cat & Fiddle. Richard's guitar playing has come a long way since the first Villains shows. A guy was playing some very strange woodwind instruments: most seemed to be double-reeded like oboes or bassoons and one looked most like an upside walking stick.
Now things took a huge leap sartorially. (The Men from U.N.C.L.E. might have been a more suitable opener, as Napoleon had observed through the week.) The Alohas looked fantastic, all five in sombreros and black shirts with huge red flames; two also wore sashes of bullets. The sound was great and that Jordan is a mean guitar player. Much dancing and hollering.
The Intercontintental Playboys looked very fine too, all four in sparking gold dinner jackets. Debate continues about the lack of a bass player. (Tommy told the Colonel and me before the show that they had been through seven!) Much dancing, but less hollering: the Playboys are more cool than frenzied.
Finished off a great evening of live music in the Harbour City by picking up `Ladies, May We Introduce Ourselves' (Playboys) and `Lodge Party' (Thurston Howlers) 12" 33 RPMs at the door for $10 and $12.
Back to gig diary.
